Thinking again about Sol LeWitt and how an idea becomes a machine...
...the written instructions for Sol LeWitt's wall drawings become visible through the hands and eyes of installers. The drawings vary from the ideals he describes because making things is inherently variable...
...and it is just that variability that opens the work. Horizontals and diagonals are uncomplicated instructions to issue but what about the lines for which no words exist?
And textures outside of language - what instructions can be given to create those?
Sol LeWitt's wall drawings are specified in written instructions, the art existing between his words and what appears on the wall.
The duration of a wall drawing is variable.
These drawings can be produced, erased, transmitted, reenacted, scaled, and varied from site to site.
The work is viewed on a wall but talked about, collected, and understood as a larger system.
The art is considered 'conceptual' but it also reads as 'spiritual' (in the way Kandinsky wrote about the spirit of an artwork transcending materials).
An unexpected wavering edge, an overrun line, a gradient that challenges the assumption of color consistency, every little nick that catches the eye, and whatever at first irritates, but later becomes the defining character, tells the story of becoming.

Dissolving boundaries between combinations and colors
Even the colors you think are the same are really different
Noticing shadow and light on a spectacular sunny day
Starting to feel warm again
Calendar out of kilter
where it varies,
Air masses collide over the studio and a cold front pushes through
Full on spring is starting to feel like summer
Suddenly surrounded by green
On a day when almost everything goes right
A late night return from the city becomes a morning making marks
Another round trip to the city noticing patterns
Self soothing during a brief power outage
Driven by longer days,
Green gains momentum
Spring, pixel by pixel
Comfortably warm with a taste of summer
Blocks in a box
what I see
but what is
back to me
Some days are busier than others
Balancing surface and subsurface
Everything has layers and levels to it,
to truly understand something
you must work towards understanding
all of its layers.
