Thinking again about Sol LeWitt and how an idea becomes a machine...
5.1.2022

...the written instructions for Sol LeWitt's wall drawings become visible through the hands and eyes of installers. The drawings vary from the ideals he describes because making things is inherently variable...
5.2.2022

...and it is just that variability that opens the work. Horizontals and diagonals are uncomplicated instructions to issue but what about the lines for which no words exist?

And textures outside of language - what instructions can be given to create those?
5.4.2022

Sol LeWitt's wall drawings are specified in written instructions, the art existing between his words and what appears on the wall.

The duration of a wall drawing is variable.

These drawings can be produced, erased, transmitted, reenacted, scaled, and varied from site to site.

The work is viewed on a wall but talked about, collected, and understood as a larger system.

The art is considered 'conceptual' but it also reads as 'spiritual' (in the way Kandinsky wrote about the spirit of an artwork transcending materials).

An unexpected wavering edge, an overrun line, a gradient that challenges the assumption of color consistency, every little nick that catches the eye, and whatever at first irritates, but later becomes the defining character, tells the story of becoming.
