Stillness and heat permeate a time-suspended summer afternoon,
Each lingering moment, quietly sitting, forever in the stillness,
Thinking how nice it would be to write or to draw, so I try
Releasing my need for acknowledgement and all wishes are fulfilled.

Rockets red glare...

7.5.2016

Taking in the moment, heat pressing on the dry grass, present in my skin, hot air deeply drawn, exhaling more, sweat dizzying, mashing pastels into gesso I imagine an impressionist picture is forming on the paper until, forgetting my self, the marks on the page and the smell of the leaves equate.

The busy intersection of mind is the scene of countless collisions.

Symbols related to the landscape have become persistent in the daily drawings over the last month; maybe prompted by our unusually hot summer, disquiet amongst the trees, several very bright, clear moons, or a water table that rain never seems to satisfy? I have nicknamed one of the symbols a 'disk' because it resembles the circle of a planet seen from afar and another, that looks like a segmented sphere, I call a 'projection'. These two signs have been alternately popping up in the drawings. A frequent swapping of these symbols suggests stories about shifting global viewpoints and competing worldviews.

Meaning emerging from the trajectory, moving one image to the next, I see persistence in the echoes between signs.

Sometimes it is really hard to decide what to do

Just through the dark forest, the Emerald City, with all its treasures, awaits your arrival.

Taking a new set of pastels out for a walk on a blistering summer day, sitting quietly between seeing and marking, allowing thoughts to evaporate, awareness and contentment resonate identically.

Riding through the Catskills on a father/son Wynton Marsalis concert road trip, my friend Andrew says I'm "starting him out right."

7.24.2016

On the days of turbulent temperament, an unsure hand, and thoughts overflowing with unsatisfied second guesses, pursing non-ordinary, resonant visual art is howling at the moon.
7.25.2016

Dreaming of sleep...
7.26.2016

Some days creativity flows like water, time gathers in the present moment, and existence speaks through the tip of the pencil, while on other days, just letting go is enough.

Taking notes from the stream...

I've been sketching new ideas after reading Christopher Alexander's thoughts about strong centers and how every design can be seen as a living system. His main contribution to architecture is his unique definition of how a building's interlocking patterns contribute to and influences those who live and work there. We would have a more beautiful world if we organized our environmental and systems designs using his methods simply because we'd value more highly our own sense of being in a space.
