A texture of silky but untrimmed hair caught my eye as a raccoon passed between the bars of a metal gate, stood in front of a stone wall, skinny but not starving, head rocking side to side, ears pointed towards us, eyes milky, obviously blind.

Haley and I were four feet away. I made a noise but the raccoon didn't flinch, Haley caught the scent, she tensed, her tail went up, and I had to hold her back from charging, she growled, pulling against her collar, almost choking.

The blind raccoon turned around and in no hurry walked back between the metal bars and under a thick hedge. We had encountered a blind raccoon on the road and I couldn't help wondering, as we continued our walk, if we had met a magical creature and if so what wisdom had been imparted?
